JOHNNY SCOTT QUINTET - PURCELL VARIATIONS FOR FIVE

Johnny Scott Quintet for Fontana UK from 1970.

Johnny Scott - Flute ; David Snell - Harp ;  Duncan Lamont - Sax ; Barry Morgan - Drums ; Arthur Watts - Bass

More superb Brit jazz from the magnificent Johnny Scott Quintet. The title is derived from a set of compositions (which make up side 1) written by Scott for a concert at The Purcell Room in London.Side 2 is made up by 4 more originals a couple from Lamont and one each for Snell and Scott. This is music of the highest order which seems to have been lost to obscurity with little or no mention of it anywhere from print to web.
Very highly recommended & big thanks to Quimsy for putting me on to it.

Anything with Duncan Lamont is welcome, a very good tenor player and also a great song writer and arranger .Who can forget "Spot The Dog" children's programme ?

Excellent set! Something completely unknown to me before I found it here, and I am *so grateful*!!!! Well, indeed I am grateful for so many excellent, previously unfamiliar records (and a few I have sought after for years)that I have found on OIR. Its a wonderment. I wonder, does anyone know whether this is the original recording of "Times 2 and a half"? - which I previously knew from a Bill Le Sage Directions in Jazz lp?

Bacoso said...

The original version of "Times 2 1/2" was recorded for the Bill Le Sage "Directions In Jazz" in 1964.

Thanks, Bacoso, for that note. I ought to have been able to work it out myself as I have a ripped copy of that lp! Anyway, thanks once again for giving us all the opportunity to hear such great - and wrongly overlooked if not forgotten - music.
